For years, producer and engineer, Taylor Young, relied on a rare dual-strainer snare to shape some of heavy music's most crushing recordings. When that drum disappeared from production, the search began for something better, an evolution, but definitely not a copy.
Working alongside Taylor, SJC engineered an entirely new design centered around independent dual snare systems, handcrafted modifications, and a build worthy of The Pit Recording Studio.
The result is one of the most unique snare drums we've ever created, so unique in fact we only made 5 of them.

Too many awesome ideas get left on the shell-cutting room floor, and this one almost joined them.
When Zach returned to SJC in 2025, one of the first calls he made was to longtime SJC artist Taylor Young. Years earlier, conversations had begun around creating a signature snare for The Pit Recording Studio before the project quietly disappeared. Zach wasn’t going to let that happen again.
For years, producer and engineer, Taylor Young, relied on a rare dual-strainer snare (originally shown to him by now-SJC player Dave Witte) to shape some of heavy music's most crushing recordings. Rather than recreate it, SJC's engineering team started from scratch.
The answer became a custom distressed 5x14 nickel-over-brass shell fitted with two independently adjustable Trick throw-offs and custom-machined snare-side hoops designed specifically for a dual-wire configuration. The original dual strainer snares this is based on were notorious for their lugs breaking under tension with no parts available, which is why we opted for Trick throws and classic double ended tubes!
The brass shell delivers explosive attack and warmth. With the distressed finish, no two shells are the same, giving every drum its own personality.
The dual snare system allows players to fine-tune sensitivity, articulation and response in ways a traditional snare simply can't.
